Interesting Events In & Around Fredericksburg

There are many reasons to consider a move to the picturesque hamlet that is Fredericksburg, Texas. Surrounded by the beauty of Texas Hill Country, this town of about 9,000 residents offers a small town ambiance with close access to San Antonio and Austin. Throughout the year, the city and surrounding towns offer an abundance of events and activities for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Fredericksburg was founded by German immigrants in 1846 and one of the highlight's of any trip to Fredericksburg is a visit to the downtown area that has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The town square, sometimes known by the German word Markplatz, is a center for many local activities, such as the weekly farmer's markets that occur from May until August. The vendors include nearby wineries, lavender farmers, stands from local restaurants, produce stands and much more.

The First Friday Art Walks are another popular local event and these take place, as the name suggests, on the first Friday of each month. There are 11 galleries that participate in the event, and in addition to enjoying a variety of art, each gallery serves up wine from a few of the local vineyards. This is a great way for you to get out and explore the downtown area. Most of the galleries are located on or near to Main Street.

The people of Fredericksburg are proud of their German traditions, so it's little wonder that the town hosts a large annual Oktoberfest. You can sample a huge variety of beers, including domestic and German brews, as well as some delicious local beers. Live music, children's activities and plenty of arts and crafts booths are set up in the downtown area, and there is a fun, festive chicken dance that stretches from the town square along Main Street.

Children are sure to enjoy the chicken dance at Oktoberfest, and there are plenty of other seasonal events that the kids will love. The Pioneer Museum, which is located downtown, is a great place for families to visit, and they host a popular yearly egg hunt at Easter. Fredericksburg also has a parade and fireworks show on July 4th each year. German heritage also is celebrated during the Christmas season. In addition to the large Christmas tree, the town boasts a stunning German Christmas pyramid, and carolers regale crowds with German holiday songs as well as traditional favorites.
